Trump Backtracks, Says Wall with Mexico Doesn't Have to Cover Entire Border

Trump Backtracks, Says Wall with Mexico Doesn't Have to Cover Entire Border

A reporter on board Air Force One on the way to France asked Trump whether he was joking about building a "solar wall".

Trump also acknowledged Thursday that "violent and vicious" rivers and natural barriers along the southern border likely mean that the wall will not cover the full stretch, which is almost 2,000 miles. "But you'll need anywhere from 700 to 900 miles", he added.

Why would Trump want the wall to be see-though, you might be asking yourself.

"As awful as it sounds, when they throw the large sacks of drugs over, and if you have people on the other side of the wall, you don't see them", he said.

"We have some incredible designs", he said.

And Trump himself reacted to news reports suggesting Democrats had bested him on the earlier catchall spending bill by taking to Twitter to complain about Senate filibuster rules and declaring that: "Our country needs a good "shutdown" in September to fix mess!" The GOP-led panels concurred with some of Trump's request, such as his down payment on a U.S. -Mexico border wall, while rejecting others such as a significant reduction in medical research.

However, the plan means the USA taxpayer would be paying for the wall and not Mexico, counter to what Trump promised on several occasions on the campaign trail.

"This would cause incalculable damage to the integrity of wildlife populations on either side of the border, as well as the massive societal disruption it would cause", Defenders of Wildlife's Senior Vice President of Conservation Programs Bob Dreher told NBC News in April.

In April, US Homeland Security chief John Kelly said it was doubtful that a wall along the full border would ever be built.

Democrats objected to the funding and significant opposition surfaced among Republicans as well, many of whom have problems with the wall.

Around 600 miles of the border are already protected by barriers but it is not clear if this is included in the length Trump refers to.

As the first step to deliver on one of his most divisive campaign pledges, the new United States president signed a directive to begin the construction of a wall on the border with Mexico just less than a week after assuming office in Washington.

"President Trump's immoral, ineffective and expensive wall is strongly opposed by Democrats and by many Republicans as well", Mrs. Pelosi said. So we've actually, in the true sense - you know, there's no reason to take it down'.

A group of asylum seekers fleeing gang and drug violence in Honduras and Mexico were improperly turned away at the U.S. -Mexico border by border patrol agents, a lawsuit filed against the U.S. government on Wednesday said.
