Turkey Marks First Anniversary of Failed Coup

Erdogan said the Turks did not "want the European Union anymore" and believed its approach to Turkey was "insincere".

Turkish police on Thursday detained a prominent film director who has made a controversial movie showing President Recep Tayyip Erdogan under gunpoint in a bloody coup d'etat, state media reported on Thursday.

To the question of why more than a hundred journalists are imprisoned, he said: "Please let's not fool the world with these lies".

Turkey also extended the detention of Amnesty International's local Director Idil Eser and nine others. "There are only two actual journalists in jail now". Erdogan, however, disputed the figure saying: "No one is jailed because of journalism here". The Turkish state-run Anadolu news agency listed among the events scheduled for Saturday a series of nationwide Quranic prayers, multiple public "Democracy Watch" marches around the country beginning at midnight, and the debut of a state-sponsored documentary screening on the event.

Last month, main opposition party deputy Enis Berberoglu, who was a journalist as well, was sentenced to 25 years in prison for leaking secret information for the goal of political or military espionage.

More than 240 people, a lot of them civilians, were killed last July when rogue soldiers tried to overthrow Erdogan's government.

The government had stated that it was Fethullah Gulen's disciples in the armed forces who had waged a campaign of terror on the night of July 15 and that his role in it deserved everyone's attention.

In the 12 months since then, a state of emergency had been in place across the country.

The Turkish military, which has long seen itself as the ultimate guardian of the secular revolution launched by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of the modern Turkish state, had staged a series of coups against democratically elected governments from 1960 to 1997.
