Explaining Kyle Larson's qualifying penalty

Explaining Kyle Larson's qualifying penalty

What To Watch For: The last five NASCAR Xfinity Series races at New Hampshire have been won from the Coors Light Pole - a series record for any track.

The Overton 301 race, which officially kicks off the second half of the season, is scheduled for 3 p.m.

Martin Truex Jr. posted the fastest single lap in the second practice session for the Overton's 301 at New Hampshire.

Truex has the pole and the rest of the field moved up a spot. Hamlin's speed came in a back-up vehicle, unloaded after his primary auto was damaged in a crash in opening practice.

He had raced to the top of the field without his suspended crew chief, turning a lap of 133.324 miles per hour to win his fourth pole of the season. Larson's time was disallowed.

Chase Elliott completed the top five, just ahead of Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jimmie Johnson in the 55-minute final tune-up. The No. 42 sat on pit road when the session went green because the vehicle failed pre-race inspection last week at Kentucky Speedway.

Larson's team was penalized 35 points Wednesday, erasing what had been a one-point advantage over Martin Truex Jr.in the driver standings. Truex posted a speed of 133.077 miles per hour. He will start at the rear of the field in Sunday's Cup race.

Kyle Larson, second to Truex in the standings, was also second to Truex on the practice leaderboard, just.001 seconds back at 131.333 miles per hour in the Chip Ganassi Racing No. 42 Chevrolet.

Wondering how Kyle Larson's vehicle passed pre-qualifying inspection but failed post-qualifying inspection Friday at New Hampshire?

Jimmie Johnson was third-fastest in the Hendrick Motorsports No. 48 Chevrolet at 131.184 miles per hour, just ahead of his teammate Chase Elliott in fourth (131.162).

"New Hampshire is a Martinsville-like short track, but it's just over a mile", said Busch, who in addition to his two New Hampshire wins, boasts nine top fives, 13 top 10s and a 13.8 average finish there.

The on-track traction will come from the surface at NHMS being treated with PJ1 TrackBite, a type of resin that will be applied to the very bottom of the track on the yellow lane, and two lanes above the racing groove. Officials added to the bottom lane and then extended the top lane with a four-foot wide strip of the traction compound before Saturday's on-track activity.
