First woman to win prestigious Fields Medal dies

First woman to win prestigious Fields Medal dies

Mirzakhani had been diagnosed with breast cancer four years ago, a year before she set the record of the first ever woman to win the prestigious Fields Medal, also known as the Nobel Prize of mathematics.

She earned her BSc in mathematics from Iran's Sharif University of Technology in 1999 and her PhD from Harvard University in 2004.

Three years later, the Iranian math prodigy died on Saturday of cancer in a US hospital.

She was survived by her husband Jan Vondrák, a Czech theoretical computer scientist and her colleague at Stanford University and a daughter named Anahita. In an interview, she once said, "Doing mathematics for me is like being on a long hike with no trail and no end in sight".

Born in Tehran, Iran, she attended high school at the National Organization for Development of Exceptional Talents.

The award was established in 1936.

Stanford President Marc Tessier-Lavigne called Mirzakhani a brilliant theorist "who made enduring contributions and inspired thousands of women to pursue math and science".

The president further expressed condolences to the country's scientific community and the bereaved family of Mirzakhani over her death. Her parents had traveled to the USA on Monday, according to the Persian-language daily Haft-e-Sobh. The award is only given out every four years to between two and four mathematicians under 40. Kerckhoff is a mathematics professor at Stanford and was one of Mirzakhani's collaborators.

"A light was turned off today".

She said the 2014 award was a great honor.

"A genius? Yes. But also a daughter, a mother and a wife", he added in a subsequent post.

"In short, Mirzakhani was fascinated by the geometric and dynamic complexities of curved surfaces - spheres, doughnut shapes and even amoebas".

Mirzakhani got the Fields Medal for Mathematics in 2014 for her work on complex geometry and dynamical systems.

Following earlier news that Mirzakhani's health had taken a turn for the worse, a spokesperson for the Iranian foreign ministry told Mehr News that Iranians worldwide were proud of her.
