House Democrats press Treasury to divulge any Trump-Russia financial ties

House Democrats press Treasury to divulge any Trump-Russia financial ties

But Short also confirmed that the White House is lobbying Republicans to change parts of the Senate's sanctions bill that would make it more hard for Trump to roll back or end sanctions against Moscow.

Meanwhile, Congressman Joaquin Castro introduced a Resolution of Inquiry directing the Secretary of State to provide Congress with any documents or communications records related to efforts to modify or revoke sanctions against Russian Federation.

This bill directed the Departments of State, Defense, and Treasury and the Director of National Intelligence to submit a strategy every two years for deterring conventional and asymmetric Iranian activities that threaten the United States and key allies in the Middle East, North Africa and beyond.

Congress is keen to take a stronger line against Russian Federation despite Trump pushing for a warmer relationship.

US President Donald Trump sidestepped a question about whether he would sign the new sanctions package if it reaches his desk.

House Republicans continue to argue Democrats are part of the hold up because they are trying to change language that was added in the last Senate version that restricts who can raise an objection in Congress to how Russian Federation is complying with sanctions.

Seeking to force Republican House leaders to allow a vote, Democrats on the House Foreign Affairs Committee introduced legislation unchanged from what passed the Senate by 98-2 on June 15 but has been stalled ever since.

A senior GOP leadership aide said that there has been a White House effort to "educate" Hill Republicans on their concerns with the bill. "It's called opposition research, or even research into your opponent", Trump said.

During an off-camera briefing Wednesday, White House Principal Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said: "I think Democrats are trying to play political games". Since then, the Senate agreed on a fix to a constitutional issue, raised by the House, which requires that bills dealing with revenue originate in the lower chamber. Now that change is drawing concern from some House Democrats, who say that it detracts from the minority's power to force a vote and hold the administration accountable if Trump tries to ease or lift Russian Federation sanctions.

House Foreign Affairs Chairman Ed Royce of California told CNN that the North Korea addition was one of several options still under consideration as House Republican leaders consider how to deal with the Senate's Russian Federation sanctions bill. Congressional review is not a part of the House's North Korea bill.

House Democrats say the technical tweaks the Senate made last month make it more hard to bring a review resolution to a vote in the House.

AshLee Strong, a spokeswoman for House Speaker Paul Ryan, said Democrats still were objecting to moving the bill in its current form.

The senators' measure would give Congress review power over any changes the president might try to make to North Korea sanctions policy that is nearly identical to the review power over Russia sanctions written into the Russia-Iran bill.

Republican presidential candidate and former U.S.Sen. He noted, "House Republicans shouldn't be providing cover for the administration and its affection for Russian Federation".
