Veteran's dying wish is for you to give him a call

Veteran's dying wish is for you to give him a call

To date, Hernandez, who has suffered several strokes, has undergone three brain surgeries.

Doctors told Hernandez and his wife Ernestine that there is nothing more they can do except to try to make his final days more comfortable, and a big part of that comfort is to see that he's happy.

An Army veteran in hospice care with a terminal illness asked his wife recently to hold his phone for him in case anyone calls. After almost two hours with no calls, Lee told his wife, "I guess no one wants to talk to me". Hernandez is blind, but text messages are welcome, and Ernestine will read them to him. He wants anyone to send him a text message or give him a call. Since then, Lee and Ernestine have received a huge number of calls and texts.

According to AZ Central, 47-year-old Lee Hernandez is an 18-year Army veteran from New Braunfels, Texas who served a tour in Iraq. He got tons of cards, calls, and texts from a lot of strangers that wished him the best and prayed for him to recover.

Ever since Fawbush's Facebook post, Hernandez's phone has been ringing nonstop, Fawbush told the Arizona Republic.

"Ernestine said his low spirits "broke my heart", adding, "[Lee's] speech is not very well, so many people didn't take much interest or want to talk with him". A post explaining Hernandez's story has been shared more than 600 times since it was orignally shared on Tuesday. Though she said he hit "rock bottom" a year ago, he has "beaten the odds and his strong will keeps him going". They request that supporters call between 2-6 p.m., and that if they don't answer it's because Hernandez is in pain. She says she will continue to give him the best life she can offer.

"Thank you, everyone, for your calls and support", Ernestine said.

The phone number to reach Hernandez is 210-632-6778.
