Officer fatally shoots Australian woman

Justine Damond the unarmed Australian woman shot dead by police.

An Australian woman has been shot dead by police in the U.S. city of Minneapolis in an incident in which the officers did not have their body cameras turned on.

Justine, who lived on Sydney's Northern Beaches before she relocated to Minneapolis, Minnesota, was a popular meditation coach and motivational speaker, as well as a trained veterinarian. A police report claimed the Shaffordshire terriers - both of whom survived - "charged at [the] officer".

Zack Damond, 22, is the son of the woman's fiancé, Don, and would have been her future stepson when they married in August.

He said his stepmother called the police after she heard a noise in the alley. It remains unclear why the officer opened fire.

The Minnesota Public Safety Department earlier confirmed said a woman was shot after two officers responded to a callout about a possible assault. "I have questions about why the body ca weren't on", she said.

The Minneapolis Police Department said the incident would be investigated. "Investigators are attempting to determine whether any video of the incident exists".

The shooting occurred on the 5100 block of Washburn Avenue South in Minneapolis's Fulton neighbourhood. While the pair was not legally husband and wife just yet, Ruszczyk was preferred to be referred to by her would-be husband's surname, Damond.

Authorities have not released the woman's name and are waiting to notify her relatives in Australia. After two officers arrived at Damond's home sometime around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday night, one officer shot her. As she spoke to the officer in the driver seat, the officer in the passenger seat pulled out his gun and shot her. Police have not explained what prompted the shooting. "And we want to remember Justine tonight, and call for answers, but we want just to remember and respect Justine, tonight, and her family, and share our love for her family, and how much we want to wrap our support around them". I'm so done with all this violence. "My heart goes out to everyone in the community, especially the family of the woman that was shot".

Minneapolis police officers began wearing body cameras last summer and are now required to use them when responding to "critical incidents".

Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges issued a statement saying she is "heartsick and deeply disturbed about this incident".

Friends have begun to pay tribute to the speaker and meditation consultant.

"She was committed to love and the relationship that was there for her".

Damond is vice president and manager of Little Six Casino in Minnesota, according to Australian news media reports.

The woman's family in Australia released a statement through the country's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, saying it's a "very hard time", according to NBC News.
