Presidential Election India 2017: Voting Begins

Presidential Election India 2017: Voting Begins

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the first to cast his vote. The parties can not issue a whip to their members to vote for a particular candidate as the election is through a secret ballot.

The contest is between the NDA nominee Kovind and candidate of several major opposition parties Meira Kumar, who was the former Lok Sabha Speaker.

Indian presidents are not elected directly by the people but by an electoral college made up of members of parliament and state assemblies. In the last presidential election in 2012, Pranab Mukherjee had defeated P.A. Sangma and got over 69 per cent votes. The change of votes pattern will only take place only in 2026. The vote, which will go on until 5 pm today, coincides with the start of the monsoon session of parliament. MP AU Singh Deo said Kovind has assured to work impartially, while BJD vice-president and minister SN Patro said the presidential candidate has "assured to protect interest of Orissa". Kovind, formerly the governor of Bihar, appears to have the numbers on his side - nearly 40 parties, including non-NDA parties, have pledged their support for him. It may be mentioned that the total number of vote's share of the MLAs and MPs in Meghalaya is 31,444. "Before entering voting chambers, polling staff will collect personal pens from the voters and hand over the special pens to be returned later", an EC official told reporters. The voting is done through a secret ballot. Ballot boxes from states will be flown and stored in Room 62 of the Parliament.

Modi was quoted as saying that there was "clarity" about the presidential poll and the "road ahead is also clear".

"We can not and must not let India be hostage to those who wish to impose upon it a narrow-minded, divisive and communal vision", Gandhi said, in an apparent reference to allegations that the BJP government was not doing enough to rein in fringe Hindu groups targeting Muslims.
