Smelling a rat: Airline denies farting passenger sparked plane evacuation

Smelling a rat: Airline denies farting passenger sparked plane evacuation

An airline spokesperson later claimed the evacuations were due to a "mechanical issue".

Several people on Flight 1927 from Charlotte to Raleigh complained Sunday of experiencing "headaches and nausea" because of a nasty odor, WNCN reported.

The aeroplane had landed at Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU), North Carolina, on 16 July at around 4pm when the man "passed gas" in the words of the official.

"But it is not due to "passed gas" as mentioned," a spokesperson for the airline said. In 2006 a farting woman forced a plane diversion after passengers told crew they smelt burning.

The flight, not identified by RDU officials, landed at the airport around 4 p.m. when the incident was reported.

Regional news outlet WNCN said that some passengers on board had become ill before they were all taken off the aircraft, citing airport officials who said that someone had "passed gas".

But had the incident been prompted by wind breakage, it would not have been the first.

Airport spokesman Andrew Sawyer said the "medical call about persons affected by an odor came in after passengers deplaned normally".
