United Kingdom chancellor Philip Hammond irks may with sexist remark

United Kingdom chancellor Philip Hammond irks may with sexist remark

"Their view is they want Theresa to get through, get through the Brexit stuff she's already said at some point she'll then step down and their view is 'none of the above".

According to the Sunday Times Mr Hammond told the cabinet that public sector workers were "overpaid", a comment that will infuriate those whose pay rises are capped at 1 per cent a year for the next five years.

He said: "This woman, fulltime worker, earns £297 a week". The newspaper, which didn't name the aide, said there was no reason to believe the rumour was true.

But The Sunday Times quotes a Cabinet source saying: Philip used a fairly inflammatory phrase.

Davis "goaded" Boris that he was a "failure", the newspaper reported.

"The care worker hurrying from house to house doesn't feel overpaid, nor does the hospital cleaner working round the clock, or the teaching assistant going the extra mile for the children she supports", she said. "They were like a pair of rutting stags locking antlers", one witness said.

The newspaper cited private comments by Andrew Mitchell, the former worldwide development secretary, as the source of the claim.

AN exasperated Philip Hammond has lashed out at cabinet rivals, who have briefed against him, accusing them of trying to undermine his attempts to secure a Brexit deal that will protect jobs and the economy. Mitchell denied being involved in any plot against May, the Mail on Sunday said.

But he suggested that hard Brexiters who don't like his plans were responsible for leaking the damaging remarks.

'I think on many fronts it would be helpful if my colleagues - all of us - focused on the job in hand.

"So these are hardcore Brexiteers [who are planting stories against you]?"

He said: "I'm simply saying that cabinet must be able to hold its discussions on government policy in private, and the PM, as I said, will remind her colleagues of that at tomorrow's meeting".

Speaking on the BBC's Sunday Politics show, International Trade Secretary Liam Fox said any transitional period should be "very time-limited", and should allow the United Kingdom to strike new trade deals - something it is unable to do as part of the EU's customs union. We've got a very good leader in Theresa May, ' Dr Fox said.

Brexit Minister David Davis will head to Brussels on Monday for a first full round of Brexit talks, with European Union officials hoping the Government, yet to set out detailed proposals on several major issues, begins to show more urgency about doing a deal before Britain leaves the bloc in 2019.

A Treasury source insists he did not use the word "overpaid".

Mr Hammond said that government ministers were becoming increasingly convinced of the need for transitional arrangements to reduce disruption as the United Kingdom leaves the EU.

Earlier, the transport secretary, Chris Grayling, said he did not recognise the reports about the cabinet meeting, during which Hammond was reportedly chastised by May for his comment about driving trains. This has been denied by "friends" of Gove.
