Wimbledon 2017: Twitter reacts to Roger Federer's record-breaking victory

Wimbledon 2017: Twitter reacts to Roger Federer's record-breaking victory

Federer faces Cilic, knowing just one more win can take him to an unprecedented eighth Wimbledon championship victory, his fifth title of the year and his first at the event since 2012.

The second set Federer started with the jerk 3:0.

It is the first time his three-year-old twin boys Leo and Lenny have seen him win Wimbledon, and Federer said: "They have no clue what's going on. This is a wonderful moment for our family".

Not that Federer was concerned as, 23 days before his 36th birthday, the father of four became the oldest men's singles champion at Wimbledon in the professional era - taking the title back without dropping a set throughout the fortnight.

Well, he does. He dons a NIKE Jersey and wields a Wilson racquet and goes by the name Roger Federer.

For the next generation, meanwhile, this was another kick in the teeth.

Three players-Federer (2007 Australian Open), Nastase (1973 Roland Garros) and Rosewall (1971 Australian Open) have won one major without dropping a set.

The 28-year-old beat Brit favourite Andy Murray and French Open victor Rafael Nadal to secure his place in the final.

Although, he has broken the men's record, the 14-year gap has only matched the record which Serena Williams reached last year.

'The media and everyone seem to have already handed Roger the trophy, and that's a good situation for us. "I'm so close now, so I have just got to stay focused". "I have had an incredible journey here and have played the best tennis of my life". I want to thank my team, they gave so much strength to me. "You should be really proud".

The win comes a year after Federer lost in the semifinals to Milos Raonic and subsequently took six months off to rehab an injured knee and refresh his body, putting doubt into his career.

No chance to save the first set from Cilic was not - Federer on his serve and didn't lose any points, and in the ninth game and closed the party another break. This is Cilic's 11th time in the main draw at Wimbledon, which means he had the longest wait, beating Pat Rafter's previous record of eight.

2003 Wimbledon Title: In 2001, Roger had defeated Pete Sampras on the very hallowed grounds at Wimbledon and the following year he was knocked out in the first round.

"It was just a feeling that I knew that I can not give my best on the court, that I can not give my best game and my best tennis, especially at this stage of my career, at such a big match".

"That was my idea also today".
