Balfour Beatty JV wins High Speed 2 contracts worth 2.5 bln stg

Balfour Beatty JV wins High Speed 2 contracts worth 2.5 bln stg

The government's preferred routes for the HS2 high speed railway north of Birmingham have been confirmed.

The first phase between London Euston and Birmingham promises faster journeys onward to Glasgow of under four hours.

Mark Cutler, Balfour Beatty VINCI Managing Director for HS2, said: "This iconic rail infrastructure project will create significant opportunities for the United Kingdom construction industry and will drive growth in skills, jobs and prosperity".

The winners of the major construction contracts for Britain's new HS2 railway have been announced, with the government claiming the £6.6 billion in deals will support 16,000 jobs across the country. With preparatory works already underway on phase one, the DfT says main construction work will start in 2018/19.

Mr Grayling will soon publish a Bill to deliver Phase 2a from the West Midlands to Crewe, with services expected to begin in 2027. This phase will complete HS2 and unlock the transformative project's full benefits for the country.

UK Transport Secretary Chris Grayling said: "This is a hugely important step in the construction of Britain's new railway, and underlines this government's determination to deliver an economy that works for all.

We look forward to working in close collaboration with HS2 to deliver this iconic project", Carillion Interim Chief Executive Keith Cochrane said.

The latest announcements come after business leaders met in Leeds last week and were told Yorkshire must make its voice heard, in order to guarantee the planned high-speed rail line is built in the region.

Joe Rukin, of the Stop HS2 campaign, said: "The case for HS2 has been invented by the very cheerleaders who intend to rake in billions of taxpayers' money which is desperately needed elsewhere, so it really is time to ditch this big white elephant before it is too late".

Since then it was made a decision to develop phase two in two stages: phase 2a - from the West Midlands to Crewe that was announced past year; and phase 2b - from Crewe to Manchester and from the West Midlands to Leeds, South Yorkshire and the East Midlands.

Joe Rukin of the Stop HS2 campaign said: "The case for HS2 has been invented by the very cheerleaders who intend to rake in billions of taxpayers' money which is desperately needed elsewhere, so it really is time to ditch this enormous white elephant before it is too late".

Campaigners have called for the original route to be backed, with residents on Mexborough's Shimmer estate protesting that the so-called "M18 route" will go through their homes or pass within yards.

The route in South Yorkshire will be the route consulted in 2016 which in part follows the M1 and M18, serves Sheffield city centre via a spur from the HS2 line, and includes provision for a northern junction allowing trains to run between Sheffield and Leeds city centres using HS2.
