Carolina Panthers fire general manager Dave Gettleman

Carolina Panthers fire general manager Dave Gettleman

If he wants to build a successful, potentially championship caliber team, I'd suggest he just fired one of the few men who's proven himself up to the task. In the months after the draft we saw the Buffalo Bills let go of Doug Whaley.

Dorsey couldn't be named as Gettleman's replacement immediately, as the Panthers would face National Football League punishment by not honoring the Rooney Rule with at least one minority candidate interview.

There was the unprecedented success in Carolina Panthers history with one Super Bowl appearance and two other playoff berths coming in a four-year span.

Gettleman served as the Giants' pro personnel director from 1999-2011 and was their senior pro personnel analyst in 2012.

Today's surprising news that the Panthers have fired General Manager Dave Gettleman could be followed by another surprise: The return of former G.M. Marty Hurney.

The Panthers were 40-23-1 under Gettleman's leadership, making the playoffs each season from 2013 to 2015, with the general manager being instrumental in the Panthers' going 15-1 and reaching the Super Bowl during the 2015 season.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport believes ex-Panthers GM Marty Hurney could replace Dave Gettleman on an interim basis. The 29-year-old eventually signed a five-year, $75-million deal with Washington.

Josh Norman and Steve Smith Sr. both expressed their feelings in different ways, but Williams calling Gettleman a "snake" certainly tops the cake.

Smith, arguably the franchise's most popular player, never took the move well.

"Its Okay! Dave I know how you feel". But there was little doubt about the ability of general manager David Gettleman to construct a roster, so his firing on Monday morning was a surprise so close to the start of training camp.

The Panthers report to Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina, on July 25 and have their first practice the following day.

Should this indeed be the case - and it very well could be since GMs are nearly never canned in mid-July after all the important personnel decisions were made - Richardson has a short-term memory about the salary-cap damage previously caused by the Panthers making financial choices based upon emotions and personal feelings about players rather than what's in the best long-term interest of the club. The Panthers are also without a team president after Danny Morrison resigned in February.

Smith, who played 13 seasons in Carolina, also said he learned he was released when he heard the news on the radio. If we accept that as true, Gettleman was sacked for making cold business decisions aimed at winning in a cold business that values only winning. Then the Kansas City Chiefs moved on from John Dorsey.
