China conducts 11-hour live fire drills in Tibet region

As the standoff between Indian and Chinese soldiers continues in Sikkim's Doklam plateau, China's military has conducted live-fire exercises in Tibet. The CCTV report did not disclose the location of the drills but said the brigade responsible for front line combat missions has always been stationed around the middle and lower reaches of the Brahmaputra (Yarlung Zangbo in Chinese) River.

In a weird claim, the Chinese media said that at least 158 Indian soldiers were killed and several others injured after China fired rockets across Indian border installations on Monday.

Though the media picked it up on Monday, the PTI has said that the state-run China Central Television (CCTV) was the first to report it.

The brigade that conducted the drills was from the PLA's Tibet Military Command. The "South China Morning Post" quoted an observer as saying that the show of strength was likely intended as a warning to India. India maintained that the boundary is yet to be settled and asked China "to desist from changing the status quo", referring to the road construction.

It is the longest standoff between the two nations since a border dispute of Tibet back in 1962, which erupted into a full-blown war and China came out on top. Another drill involved the use of anti-tank grenades and missiles. The video also showed radar units identifying enemy aircraft and soldiers using anti-aircraft artillery to destroy targets, the report said. Separately, Tibet's mobile communication agency conducted a drill on July 10 in Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, where members practised setting up a temporary mobile network to secure communications in an emergency, the Global Times reported. It began on June 18, after Beijing said New Delhi had violated border agreements after Indian troops allegedly entered Doklam and stopped the Chinese Army from constructing a road. The rift escalated after Chinese Army's construction party attempted to build road near the area. Doka La is the Indian name for the region which Bhutan recognises as Dokalam, while China claims it as part of its Donglang region.

China has called for Indian troops to immediately withdraw from the area, while India has responded that it has no intention of doing so.
