First round of Brexit talks begins in Brussels on Monday

First round of Brexit talks begins in Brussels on Monday

British Prime Minister Theresa May outlined the proposals last month, calling them a "fair and serious offer".

Former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair said, "The whole issue to do with Brexit is that we know why we left but we didn't know previous year what the terms of leaving would be".

"Given what is at stake, and what, daily, we are discovering about the costs of Brexit, how can it be right deliberately to take off the table the option of compromise between Britain and Europe so that Britain stays?"

"Reform is now on Europe's agenda", he said.

He also suggests that he has had discussions with a number of European leaders who are "willing to consider changes to accommodate Britain, including around freedom of movement".

"Yet this option is excluded". On freedom of movement, the principle is indivisible.

John McDonnell has accused Tony Blair of being out of touch with the "nature of the debate" when it comes to Brexit negotiations.

"This is actually going to distract us from with dealing with the real problems of the country - and it's going to make us poorer".

But, like non-EU immigrants now, they would lose the right to vote in local elections in Britain and would be subject to minimum salary requirements to be able to bring family members into the country.

Blair's intervention was dismissed by the senior Labour backbencher Frank Field - one of the few Labour MPs to back Leave in the referendum.

In the BBC Radio 4 interview, he went on to suggest that Brexit - if followed by a government led by the current Labor party leader Jeremy Corbyn - would leave the United Kingdom "in a very serious situation". In March 2022, before the next election, we would leave the European Economic Area and start our new life as a fully independent nation, in control of our money, our borders and our laws.

"In addition to that, I believe that they've set a tone for these negotiations, which is not constructive".

Arriving at a separate European Council meeting in Brussels, Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said the United Kingdom had made a "very fair, serious offer".

One unnamed Cabinet minister was reported have hit back, claiming Mr Hammond was part of an attempt by "the Establishment" to prevent Britain ever leaving the EU.

"I think they thought that the likelihood was that the Tories would be the government, but were determined to neuter the mandate", he said.

"This is a completely changed situation in Europe".

"What I don't buy is two things".

MORE THAN half of people said Brexit must mean Brexit, a poll comissioned by Tony Blair has said.
