In 1995 Jacques Chirac became the first President of France to accept partial responsibility for the deportation and extermination of 76,000 French Jews.

Macron insisted that "it was indeed France that organised this".

"It was indeed France that organized this", Macron said, referring to the mass arrests of Jewish citizens by French police authorities who cooperated with the Nazis.

"Antisemitism did not die with Vichy", Mr Macron said.

"It's convenient and easy to see Vichy as something perpetrated by foreign agents but it was the reality".

"We will never surrender to the messages of hate", said Macron.

The emotional ceremony at the Vel d'Hiv stadium outside Paris included speeches by French Jewish leaders.

TRT World's Kim Vinnell reports. "It's a real satisfaction to find someone before us who [understands this]", he added.

Macron's office said he is concerned about Israel's security but also about growing Jewish settlement building, and anxious that Netanyahu is backing away from commitment to a two-state solution.

Regarding Palestine, Netanyahu told the French president that the source of the conflict is the Palestinian refusal to recognize a national state for the Jewish people and to allow it to live in peace.

He said Israelis and Palestinians should be able "to live side by side within secure and recognised borders with Jerusalem as the capital".

French President Emmanuel Macron assured Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that he would be "vigilant" on the agreement signed on the Iranian nuclear, with a view to its "strict implementation".

The Israeli Prime Minister stands accused of violating worldwide law by setting up a blockade in Gaza and planting Israeli settlements on the Palestinian West Bank.

Macron raised concerns about the arming of Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah. The French leader repeated his criticism of the expansion of Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria, which he described as potential obstacles to peace.

Lavrov also noted that preparatory work ahead of the July 7 agreement between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his United States counterpart Donald Trump to implement a regional ceasefire had been conducted with all interested parties, including Israel.

Two leaders also discussed fighting extremism in Syria and elsewhere, and improving economic cooperation.

"I'm here to mourn the victims".
