Prez polls: Voting begins across India

Prez polls: Voting begins across India

# President of India is not elected by the people of India.

The Tripura Assembly has 60 MLAs of which 51 are from the ruling Left Front, six from Trinamool Congress and three from Congress.

At Bengaluru: The polling was also underway at Room No. 106 of Vidhana Soudha. "The special pen will have to be returned to the polling staff. Voting by using any other pen will be held invalid (under Rule 31 (1) (d) of the Presidential and Vice Presidential Elections Rules 1974)", an official was quoted as saying by the Times of India. Chief Minister Siddharamaiah, who conducted the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting prior to the commencement of voting, cast his vote along with party MLAs.

The election for the post of Vice President is scheduled for August 5.

There are two candidates in the fray for the coveted post - National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate Ram Nath Kovind and Opposition's candidate Meira Kumar. For opposition candidate Meira Kumar, Congress MLA S Vijayadharani and DMK Whip R Sakkarapani were the authorised representatives. All MPs have a similar vote value of 708. It will be only the second time that India has had a Dalit head of state.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has notified election to the post of Vice-President on August 5.

Ruling NDA's Presidential candidate Ram Nath Kovind has clear edge in terms of numbers. However, they are not in either of the camp and likely to play the key role to elect a new President.

Today the Presidential election 2017 voting begins to elect India's president.

A polling staff collected the personal pens from MPs/ MLAs before their entry into the voting chamber and handed him/her the special pen.

The pens have been introduced following a controversy during voting in the Rajya Sabha polls in Haryana in September 2016. Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has cast his vote in Gujarat.

In another first, the poll watchdog has also prepared special posters carrying dos and don'ts for the voters. Of these, 768 MPs and four MLAs voted here.

The EC has also prepared posters on dos and don'ts at the polling centre.

As two seats are vacant both in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, and one MP did not have the right to vote, a total of 771 MPs were eligible for participating in the election process.
