NYC Resident Dies From Papaya Salmonella Outbreak

The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene says Caribena brand yellow Maradol papayas have sickened 47 people nationwide.

The CDC says 47 people have been infected with the Salmonella Kiambu strain in 12 states, including 12 in NY. According to the Maryland agency, its labs found salmonella on three of five papayas from a Baltimore retail store. Those infected are from less than a year old to to 95 years old.

Ten of those cases are NYC residents and one elderly NY resident has died. In the USA, about 1.2 million people become ill with nontyphoidal Salmonella and over 450 people die from the disease each year.

Those infected with salmonella develop fever, diarrhea and abdominal cramps about 12 to 72 hours after swallowing the germ, and most recover without any treatment the CDC said. But infants, toddlers, old age patients and those who have a markedly weak immune system are at severe risk. The Salmonella Kiambu strain is linked to the cases in other states however, it is not yet clear whether Salmonella Thompson is part of this multistate outbreak. When diarrhea is too severe in people infected with Salmonella, the infection can spread from the intestines to the blood stream, and in such cases, the illness can cause death unless the individual is treated immediately with antibiotics. CDC officials interviewed the infected people and found that 11 of 25 people (44 percent) reported eating papayas before their illness.

Health officials issue a nationwide Salmonella warning for papayas. Both samples were of the yellow Maradol papaya kind. Papayas from a store in Maryland tested positive for two strains of Salmonella.

The CDC is urging people not to eat yellow Maradol papayas and restaurants not to serve them.

"Investigators are working to learn where the contamination occurred in the supply chain", the CDC said.
