Anne Hathaway in Talks to Replace Amy Schumer as 'Barbie'

What do you think of Anne Hathaway starring as Barbie on the big screen?

Sony's "Barbie" movie is apparently negotiating with Anne Hathaway to star as the lead, according to The Tracking Board. She is expelled from the idealistic land and journeys to the real world, where she discovers that being unique is an asset.

Barbie is now slated to hit theaters June 29, 2018. The outlet stresses that Hathaway's casting is far from a done deal, however, and no official offer has yet been put on the table.

The 34-year-old Brooklyn native would replace Amy Schumer, who dropped out of the project in March, citing scheduling conflicts. Variety reported the story is akin to "Enchanted", "Splash" and "Big". That director is Alethea Jones, an Australian up-and-comer whose feature debut, Fun Mom Dinner, comes out on August 4.

Hathaway recently wrapped filming on the franchise spinoff Ocean's Eight, and wowed audiences with her surprising turn in the indie monster movie Colossal from earlier this year.

But while these two actresses seem to have little in common, this role could actually be a ideal fit for Hathaway.

When Schumer was still attached, the Barbie was set to subvert the iconic Barbie mythology, spinning the narrative toward a more contemporary audience and highlighting feminism, equality, and identity.

Sony still intends to stick to its projected June 29, 2018 release date, though it is not clear when the production would start.

According to Variety, studio reps have stated that the casting is now "premature" but they're set to strike a deal with Hathaway once "scheduling arrangements" have been made.
