South African nine year old third child 'virtually cured' of HIV

South African nine year old third child 'virtually cured' of HIV

The International AIDS Society conference organisers warned in a statement that "all of the scientific challenges still before us are threatened by a weakening resolve to fund HIV science".

It's only the third such case involving children in recent years - joining the 'Mississippi Baby' and the remission of a French child who successfully went drug-free for at least 12 years - and gives new hope that early treatment could lead to a virtual cure for HIV-infected babies.

The child was treated with HIV medications early in life, but has not received anti-HIV drugs for eight and a half years, according to the researchers, who reported the case today (July 24) at an worldwide AIDS conference in Paris.

"With global political will and funding for HIV on the decline. these patients arriving at hospitals sick with AIDS will have any hope of reprieve snatched away", said Mit Philips, health policy advisor at MSF.

"Further study is needed to learn how to induce long-term HIV remission in infected babies‚" said Anthony Fauci‚ director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases‚ part of the National Institutes of Health.

While the doctors report detecting tiny fraction of immune cells that still have the virus integrated into them, the child's immune system remains healthy, and there is no sign of HIV infection.

In the study, HIV-infected infants were randomly assigned to receive either early or deferred antiretroviral therapy (ART).

The 2017 report by United Nations Programme on HIV/Aids (Unaids) has flagged Kenya's population of school-going teenagers as the most likely to stop treatment.

"We believe there may have been other factors in addition to early ART that contributed to HIV remission in this child".

According to a source, The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a lentivirus (a subgroup of retrovirus) that causes HIV infection and over time, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).

"This is really the first step toward HIV remission and a cure", according to virologist Deborah Persaud with the Johns Hopkins Children's Center in Baltimore.

In Swaziland, new HIV infections have been almost halved among adults, and HIV viral load suppression - a key marker of the body successfully controlling the virus - has doubled since 2011. The blood showed no detectable level of virus for 13 years after completion of treatment. Viral and host characteristics of a child with perinatal HIV-1 following a prolonged period after ART cessation in the CHER trial.

A second child living in France has lived 11 years without needing further treatment.

In fighting off full blown infections after lengthier periods of treatments early in life as two two other children born with HIV one in France and one in MS had shown similar promise.

None had the rare mutation, known as delta 32, that produces immune system cells lacking the receptors to which HIV attaches.

"Our team has been keeping an eye on the viral loads and we're seeing that there's no detectable virus in the child's blood".
