USB 3.2 Uses Same Cables, Doubles Data Rates

USB 3.2 Uses Same Cables, Doubles Data Rates

One of the most compelling features of USB Type-C is that it can be used for more than just USB signalling; other protocols such as Thunderbolt 3 and DisplayPort can use the same ports and the same cabling.

Type-C is a reversible cable that is meant to charge all of your gadgets and even serve as a new audio jack, video output or charger.

USB 3.2 will enable USB devices to use all four pairs simultaneously, providing a simple way to double performance of existing cables.

The USB-IF and the USB 3.0 Promoter Group have announced USB 3.2, which will be fully unveiled at USB Developer Days 2017 in September.

You can find out everything you need to know about USB-C here, but essentially, rather than a data transfer standard, it's the latest form of physical connection for USB, like with microUSB and miniUSB.

This is all possible because USB-C ports and cable were initially created to support multi-lane operations, which will allow for up to two lanes of 5 Gbps (USB 3.0 and first-gen USB 3.1 speeds) or two lanes of 10 Gbps operation (second-gen USB 3.1 speeds). While USB host controllers were initially designed for single-lane operation, the USB 3.2 spec doubles that to two, allowing for two 5 Gbps lanes (which would equal the 10Gbps maximum of the current spec) or two 10 Gbps lanes, boosting maximum throughput to 20 Gbps.

Do you use USB 3.1's full 10 Gbps transfer speeds?

So your existing USB-C cable should be capable of allowing USB 3.2 data transfer speeds once hardware starts appearing. With SuperSpeed-certified cables and a USB 3.2 host (meaning the thing you're plugging into), you can push 2GB across the connection each second.

Now, we've had the launch of USB 3.2, which again ups the data transfer speeds.

The USB 3.0 Promoter Group today detailed in a press release that USB 3.2 will be able to double the performance by taking advantage of multi-lane operations.

Another benefit of USB 3.2 is that it will work with USB 3.0 and earlier devices, and requires only a minor hub update to "assure seamless transitions between single and two-lane operation".
