When will the standalone HTC Vive headset be released in the UK?

There has been talk of a standalone virtual reality headset from HTC which wouldn't require users to carry a PC with them wherever they go. The next wave of VR innovation seems to be focused at freeing headsets from the shackles and cables, and HTC is jumping at the forefront with its new Vive standalone headset, powered by none other than Qualcomm's latest platform. Built using Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 mobile processor, it will act independently of a PC and will use battery power for a few hours of operation. And one of the most popular names in this sector of technology is HTC, courtesy to the HTC Vive. Think of it as HTC's rival to Samsung's Gear VR, but you don't need a phone or a PC for HTC's to work.

HTC said the device would deliver "outstanding standalone VR experience", and developers can register on the Viveport site in China. For another, these VR headsets keep us tethered to desks or, at the very least, laptops. If true, this could make for an interesting battle between Oculus and HTC in the Chinese VR market, though admittedly, HTC already has a huge presence in China as it stands. The bad news is that The Vive Standalone has only been announced as exclusive to the Chinese market later this year.

Back at Google I/O in May, Google announced that it would soon be introducing standalone VR headsets alongside the existing ones that are powered by your smartphone.

This essentially means the Vive Standalone can perform inside-out positional tracking - putting it in close ranks with more sophisticated VR headsets the likes of HTC's own flagship Vive and the Oculus Rift. They offer the most immersive VR experiences, especially when coupled with motion controllers that replicate your hands in the virtual world.

HTC said that content for the upcoming headset would be available through the Viveport distribution system.

HTC claims that the new Vive Standalone VR headset will deliver an "outstanding standalone VR experience" making it the "best-in-class premium device for this segment in the China market".
