3 more Cong MLAs resign in Guj ahead of RS polls

3 more Cong MLAs resign in Guj ahead of RS polls

After six Congress MLAs of the Gujarat Assembly submitted their resignations in two consecutive days and three more suspected of quitting on Saturday, a anxious Congress flew 46 of its legislators to party-ruled Karnataka, to prevent poaching by the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP).

In the wee hours of Saturday morning, 44 Congress MLAs from Gujarat were ferried to Bengaluru in a hurry.

Similarly, another BJP leader Prabhat Jha mocked the Congress, and said it is not more a party, but is being run by a family.

Of the total 11 Rajya Sabha members from the State, the term of three - Irani and Dilipbhai Pandya (both BJP) and Ahmed Patel - is coming to an end on August 18.

The Congress nominee can sail through if he musters the support of 47 MLAs.

Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani brushed off the charges but not after taking pot-shots at the Congress.

Patel has been re-nominated to the Upper House by the Congress, which had 57 MLAs in the 182-member Gujarat Assembly, of whom six have resigned.

Another lot of resignations from the Congress shouldn't come as a surprise. This time it's Ahmed Patel, the confidante and political advisor to Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

Vaghela's close relative Balwantsinh Rajput, who was the Congress' Chief Whip in the assembly till on Thursday, will also file papers on Friday to contest the Rajya Sabha elections. Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Smriti Irani and BJP national president Amit Shah are other two candidates fielded by the party. "Thus, it will be impossible for Ahmed Patel to win the Rajya Sabha polls", Raghavjee told media persons yesterday. The Congress has accused the BJP of horse-trading in Gujarat and using "money, muscle and state power" to engineer defections. MLA Nalin Kotadiya, NCP MLA Jayant Bosky and other Congress MLAs met the leaders during the day.

Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi also suggested the Congress leaders approach the Election Commission for redressal of their grievance. "You have seen this naked drama. The policy of the BJP in Gujarat is - by hook or by crook, come to power by breaking all laws", he said. According to party leaders, this does not mean that Raolji will not resign but is looking to renegotiate and then resign.

"A large number of Congress workers are unhappy with the way the party is functioning. Therefore, I made a decision to resign as the MLA", Parmar said.
