Spinners deliver on day four as India register their biggest win overseas

Spinners deliver on day four as India register their biggest win overseas

Set a mammoth 550 runs to win and with two full days to go, the doors were literally closed on Sri Lanka.

India took a 1-0 lead in their series with Sri Lanka as Virat Kohli's 17th Test hundred helped them to an emphatic 305-run victory.

Speaking after India's win over Sri Lanka Kohli lauded the young allrounder after a debut which saw him whack a fifty at over a run a ball.

Apart perhaps for Dimuth Karunaratne who ground out 97 off 208 balls, he had little to no assistance though with Upul Tharanga (10) and Danushka Gunathilaka (2) unable to see off the seamers.

"Yes, we would like to think we ticked all the boxes with this win".

Galle: India produced a strong bowling performance to take the upper hand at tea on the third day of the opening Test at the Galle International Stadium here on Friday. "About Dinesh Chandimal, there's no confirmation, but I expect him to play the next game", added the stand-in skipper. "If I am part of the team, not part of the team, again, I will try to do my best wherever I am", he said. From playing the pull shot - not some knee-jerk swipe, but controlled hits with excellent placement - to driving with the full face of the bat, Abhinav was in his element. Kohli fell to Nuwan Pradeep for just three in the first innings and would have been disappointed about not cashing in against a lacklustre Sri Lankan bowling attack.

Man-of-the-match Dhawan said, "I really enjoyed batting over here". When I have some time in between Tests, and if I'm not a part of the IPL, I prefer to go and play some county cricket. They just seem to be getting worse and worse. India had smartly advanced to 189/2 before Mukund (81) wasted an opportunity to score a maiden Test ton and a review to call it a day in Galle.

Virat Kohli had a superb time in the longest format of the game from the start of the tour to the West Indies a year ago as he notched up four double centuries in eight months. In the first session of the match itself the game started slipping away from us. In that Test, two Zimbabwe batsmen got hundreds and the Lankan bowlers had to toil more than 90 overs in both innings to take all ten wickets. He is now second in the list which is headed by legendary Sunil Gavaskar who hit 11 centuries as captain.

But the right-hander returned to his best in the second innings, moving to 76 not out at stumps on day three and then pushing on to three figures on the fourth morning.

The second Test of the series will start on August 3 and will be played at Colombo.
