Williams accepts sub di Resta will be 'nervous'

Williams accepts sub di Resta will be 'nervous'

Brazilian Felipe Massa was cleared to take part in final Hungarian Grand Prix practice on Saturday after a health scare triggered fears the Williams driver would be unable to race.

Asked about stand-in Di Resta, who hasn't raced in F1 since 2013, Williams said there were no expectations on the 31-year-old's shoulders.

The team released a statement saying Massa made the decision to withdraw from the event himself after FP3 and that the team's focus is now on ensuring he can compete in the Belgian Grand Prix after August's summer break.

Despite his limited preparation Di Resta turned in an impressive performance, qualifying ahead of Sauber's Marcus Ericsson in 19th but finishing just 0.8s off a place in Q2 and 0.7s behind Williams teammate Lance Stroll. He ended up racing in a auto for the Hungarian Grand Prix Qualifying that he had never driven in before.

Di Resta was due to commentate for Sky F1 at the Hungaroring but swapped the commentary box for the cockpit at just 30 minutes' notice. Despite being cleared by medical staff on Friday night, the same symptoms produced themselves on Saturday morning before the all-important Qualification session.

Di Resta will take over the unwell Massa's vehicle, which will be renumbered to #40, from the start of qualifying.

"You're very anxious. Nervous but very excited".

'I'm very happy with what we have done and I could never have expected to go out there and be so close straight away and equally feel as comfortable in the vehicle as I did, Di Resta added.

Deputy team principal Claire Williams confirmed Massa was feeling unwell again but refused to comment on what would happen. You go straight in the deep end.

"These cars are top of their game and it's like being back at home driving the best balanced auto you've ever driven".

"I think Felipe Massa is more upset than anything else", said Williams. You have to be very committed and confident.

"I'm sure there are some nerves there, he hasn't had much time to get ready, but I have utter confidence in him that if anyone can do this, Paul can".
