Police SUVs show no signs of fumes

Police SUVs show no signs of fumes

The issue with the first responder Ford Explorer Interceptor has been known for months, but CBS News reports that over the weekend, federal regulators expanded their investigation, impacting around 1.3 million vehicles.

"We started hearing that there may be a potential problem with carbon monoxide, where officers were displaying symptoms when the air conditioning was run on the maximum setting", said Marietta police officer Chuck McPhilamy.

Ford will continue investigating all reports from its police customers, including the exhaust manifold issue referenced by National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Ford says that they will cover the cost of specific repairs in every Police Interceptor Utility that may be affected, regardless of age, mileage or aftermarket modifications made after purchase.

The Champaign and University of IL police departments could not be reached for comment.

In a statement, the city said the vehicles will not go back into service until they are "confident the risk to our employees has been eliminated".

Police departments have reported smelling carbon monoxide inside the top-selling police vehicle, which is manufactured at the Chicago Assembly Plant in Hegewish.

Ford said last week that it believes the problem to be largely confined to police vehicles, nearly all of which have holes drilled through various parts of them for equipment mounts, possibly allowing allowing fumes to seep in. "We have not found elevated levels of carbon monoxide in regular Ford Explorers". Injuries range from loss of consciousness, headaches, crash-related injuries, and up to one carbon monoxide-related exposure injury.

"Safety is our top priority", Weigandt said. Some news reports have suggested that cracks have been found in exhaust manifolds on some of the vehicles. Each complaint said exhaust fumes leaked into the cabin, resulting in officers becoming ill. If a vehicle has such an odor, customers should bring it to a Ford dealer to address that issue.

Sgt. Chriswell Scott said the Marana Police Department will install carbon monoxide detectors in its 8 Explorers. Customers with concerns can call a dedicated hotline at (888) 260-5575 or visit their local dealer.

Ford said the concerns are isolated just to Ford Police Interceptor Utility vehicles, and that drivers of regular, non-police Ford Explorers have no reason to be concerned.
