Amazon Cloud Customers Are Told: Don't Bypass China's internet Gates

Amazon Cloud Customers Are Told: Don't Bypass China's internet Gates

The instruction comes after Apple Inc removed VPN services from its Chinese app store over the weekend, amid a government crackdown against their use to bypass the so-called "Great Firewall", which restricts access to overseas websites.

Among the pages which are no longer legally accessible by the citizens of Russian Federation who do not use VPN, are PokerStars, Bwin.Party and 888. Initially, ExpressVPN said its "preliminary research" showed "that all major VPN apps for iOS have been removed".

The New York Times reported recently that Apple had taken steps to remove VPN and anti-censorship apps from its Chinese app store.

Analysts believed that the government has been more insistent on demanding companies to make acknowledgements following the passage of the new cybersecurity law, and ahead of the Communist Party conclave later this year, at which most of China's top leader are expected to be replaced.

The recent removal of some VPN apps from Apple's App Store in China has prompted criticism, with some accusing Apple of bowing to pressure from Beijing and placing its business interests above its values.

Cook did concede, though, that heavy regulations can stifle innovation, saying that the company was "hopeful that over time the restrictions that we're seeing are loosened because innovation really requires freedom to collaborate and communicate".

China is Apple's largest market outside the United States.

VPNs are very important to a lot of businesses and various groups as they depend on its ability to connect to a more extensive internet.

He said that Apple had no choice but to follow the stricter laws laid down by Chinese authorities, which require that everyone who operates a VPN must have government permission to do so. Its stance is that rules governing cyberspace should mimic real-world border controls and that the internet should be subject to the same laws as sovereign states. "These apps remain available in all other markets where they do business".

The law was also criticized by Russia's most famous asylum recipient, former US security consultant Edward Snowden, who leaked a trove of classified USA documents on government surveillance before fleeing to Russian Federation. Like we would if the USA changed the law here, we have to abide by them in both cases.

Yokubaitis added, "We view access to the Internet in China as a human rights issue, and I would expect Apple to value human rights over profits".

Due to the extensive censorship demands made on foreign internet companies, Google formally withdrew from China in 2010 - although since then, the company has had multiple discussions with the country's leadership about returning.

In an earnings call Tuesday, Cook said China tightened its rules on virtual private networks, or VPNs, in 2015 and was now making a renewed push to enforce them.
