Florida reports 1st sexually transmitted Zika case in 2017

Florida health officials have confirmed the first sexually transmitted Zika case of 2017 in the state.

The Zika virus doesn't appear to be transmitted through saliva, according to a study published online August 1 in Nature Communications. Health officials also stressed that Zika can be sexually transmitted and precautions should be taken, especially if someone or their partner has traveled to an area where Zika is active. "The department notified mosquito control, and appropriate mosquito reduction activities are taking place", the Department of Health said.

There have been 118 Zika virus cases reported in Florida, officials said. Health officials stressed there is no evidence that mosquitoes are transmitting Zika anywhere in the state.

Mosquitoes are the main cause of Zika infection in people. This case study highlights the importance of using condoms during sexual intercourse after visiting a Zika-infected area in addition to using mosquito repellents and barriers. To prevent yourself from contacting the disease, it is highly recommended that you must avoid travelling to places that have reported outbreaks of Zika.

The researchers swabbed the tonsils of five monkeys with saliva and swabbed the tonsils of three monkeys with a concentrated high dose of Zika virus in solution.

The virus has been linked to serious birth defects, including microcephaly. Pregnant couples with recent travel to areas with active Zika transmission should consider using condoms for the duration of the pregnancy.

The Kalamazoo County Health & Community Services Department is participating in a mosquito surveillance program to ensure insects carrying the virus aren't in West Michigan.
