Cannabis Firm to Build Marijuana Mecca in Las Vegas Desert

Cannabis Firm to Build Marijuana Mecca in Las Vegas Desert

American Green has purchased the ghost town and plans to transform it into a marijuana tourist destination.

The southern Californian town's current owner, Roxanne Lang, will not reveal the price of the deal before the sale closes, but the property was listed at $5m (£3.8m) when it was up for sale past year.

According to American Green employee Stephen Shearin, the move will show "that there was a viable means of having a cannabis-friendly municipality and further making it energy independent", adding that the purchase and creation of Nipton as a pot-friendly village may inspire others to do the same, cited by Bloomberg.

American Green has agreed a deal to buy the town of Nipton for $5m (£3.8m).

Owned by Gerald Freeman and his family since 1984, the town boasts a small store, a bed and breakfast, an RV park, and the Whistle Stop Cafe, whose name pays homage to the rail road line that still sees trains pass through town, though stops must be pre-arranged with the rail road.

American Green said its project will create jobs and be a model of the marijuana industry's role in "stimulating and accelerating the rebuilding of struggling small town economies" where the drug has been legalized.

"We are excited to lead the charge for a true 'Green Rush, '" said David Gwyther, chairman and president of American Green after the announcement that it had acquired the century-old community.

Located just inside the California border with Nevada, the tiny desert outpost of Nipton - originally built beside a gold mine in the late 19th century - is uniquely situated just nine miles off of the heavily-traveled Los Angeles/Las Vegas Route 15 traffic corridor, making easy access for those traversing the popular highway that connects the two global destinations.

"I like to say it's conveniently located in the middle of nowhere", jokes Lang.

The company will own 120 acres of land, which includes a school building, a hotel, mineral baths and a general store. He said he hopes the new owners will let him and his wife stay.
