Cleveland Indians, Red Sox to play postponed game on August 14

Cleveland Indians, Red Sox to play postponed game on August 14

Despite not playing on Wednesday, Boston upped its first-place lead over the Yankees to a full game.

Boston took two of three from Chicago at Guaranteed Rate Field earlier this year, outscoring the White Sox 21-13 over the three games.

If there's any caveat to the injury, it's that the veteran was lifted from the game in the bottom of the 11th for Mitch Moreland, who crushed a walk-off, solo homer off of White Sox reliever Aaron Bummer to give Boston a 3-2 win in extras.

Throughout his Major League Baseball career, Sale has dominated NY posting an ERA of 1.17 in 9 starts and 12 appearances. In his career, Shields is 9-13 with a 4.40 ERA and 145 strikeouts against Boston.

The Red Sox have carefully crafted the starting rotation for the remainder of the season so that ace Chris Sale will face the Yankees at least three more times, manager John Farrell explained to reporters on Thursday.

White Sox left-hander Carlos Rodon gave up one hit with five strikeouts over four scoreless innings to open the game. Heath Hembree got the win, improving to 2-3 this season by throwing a scoreless top half of the 11th.

After finishing the evening 0-for-4 with three strikeouts, he is now riding a 5-for-29 slide with nine strikeouts over his previous eight games.

Sale now leads the AL in strikeouts with 216 and in ERA at 2.70.

Chicago is 1-7 in Shields' last 8 road starts and 1-10 in their last 11 games against a left-handed starter while the under is 7-0 in their last 7 games against a left-handed starter.

This season Moreland is hitting a mere.231 against left-handed pitching, which has pushed him into a platoon role at first base.

Six seems to be a magic number for Shields, as he's given up six runs in four of his last seven starts.

The AL East-leading Red Sox won both games of the abbreviated series, posting a dramatic 12-10 victory Tuesday night on Christian Vazquez's game-ending, three-run homer with two outs in the ninth off closer Cody Allen.
