Moscow regards new European Union sanctions as far-fetched

The newly sanctioned individuals and companies will be subject to restrictive measures because their actions undermine the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine, EU officials said.

The three Russian nationals and three companies added to the European Union blacklist over Russia's encroachments against Ukraine were involved in the transfer of the Siemens gas turbines to Crimea, it said.

Russia invaded and annexed the Crimea in 2014 and continues to support pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine.

On Friday, the European Union blacklisted Russia's Technopromexport and Interavtomatika companies, as well as Russian Deputy Energy Minister Andrei Cherezov, Head of the ministry's Department for Operational Control and Electricity Management Evgeniy Grabchak and Technopromexport CEO Sergei Topor-Gilka. "And so be it until the full restoration of sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, including Crimea!" he wrote on Facebook.

Gas turbines are a substantial element in the development of new power plants, it pointed out. The plants have been partially built, but have been created to operate with gas turbines made by a Siemens subsidiary.

The three persons were added to the sanctions list for their responsibility in supplying Crimea with gas turbines from Russian Federation. The measures include the reduction of the United States' diplomatic presence to 455 people, or the same number of Russian diplomatic workers now residing in the United States. "If they do it, the only reason would be the desire to harm Trump", the expert concluded.

The measures come despite the fact that the EU just days ago bitterly criticized the United States over fresh sanctions targeting Russian Federation for election meddling, on the grounds that it could harm European energy firms.
