Heat forces Halep to withdraw from Citi Open in quarters

Heat forces Halep to withdraw from Citi Open in quarters

South Africa's Kevin Anderson pounded 21 aces, the last one completing a big upset in the second round of the Citi Open, 6-3, 6-7 (6), 7-6 (7) over top-seeded Dominic Thiem of Austria on Thursday in Washington.

Anderson saved a match point before dispatching the World No 7 6-3, 6-7 (6/8), 7-6 (9/7) in a thriller that lasted two hours and 46 minutes.

Fifth seed Alexander Zverev, of Germany, saw off Russia's Daniil Medvedev 6-2 6-4 and will face second seed Kei Nishikori in the other semi.

Anderson missed a chance in the second set to convert a match point and in the third set, he swerved close to the precipice. Sock won the match 7-5, 6-4.

But Thiem sent a backhand wide on the penultimate point and Anderson blasted an ace wide to reach his fourth Washington quarter-final, matching his best result.

In the third set it really seemed like Thiem, the number one seed of the tournament, and seventh seed in the world, would win the match. The 25-year-old has reached the quarter-final of Citi Open 2017, a hardcourt Masters 500 tournament.

The quarterfinal matchups are Anderson vs. Bhambri, Raonic vs.

However, he made a good comeback in the second set, breaking the World no. 45's serve in the first game itself.

"I've practised with him before, but that was a few years ago. I felt I had a shot after winning the second set but got broken early in the third set and it's much harder to come back against a big server", Bhambri was quoted as saying by PTI. "It's a challenge", Anderson said.

In the women's doubles event, top-seeded Sania Mirza and Romanian partner Monica Niculescu lost to USA's Eugenie Bouchard and Canada's Sloane Stephens 6-1, 5-7, 8-10 in the semi-final.
