London 2017: Family so special to champion Farah

London 2017: Family so special to champion Farah

A PULSATING World Championships 10,000m ended with Sir Mo Farah winning yet another gold medal at the London Stadium.

That he claimed it in the season's fastest time of 26:49.51 seconds was a testament to his experience.

On Friday Mo Farah won the men's 10,000m gold to make history at the World Athletics Championships in the British capital.

Farah did the double at the previous two world championships and at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics and few would bet against him saluting again in the 5000m final on August 12, his final hitout at a global championships.

Farah's focus now moves to the 5,000m heats on Wednesday ahead of next Saturday's final, his last global race before he switches to the marathon, and he is confident he will recover in time.

All manner of names have been brought into the mix in the past, but the might of Kenya and Ethiopia's stable of distance runners have been unable to surpass Farah at a major track showpiece since Ibrahim Jeilan did so over the distance at the 2011 World Championships in Daegu.

Canada's Mohammed Ahmed, who competes for Portland's Bowerman Track Club, took eighth in a national record 27:02.35 and US champion Hassan Mead of the Oregon Track Club Elite in Eugene placed 15th in 27:32.49, a personal best. "I didn't think I'd lose but I knew it was very tough".

However, Farah decided with 14 laps remaining to show them he was unaffected by their tactics accelerating down the finishing straight to briefly head the field. "That trip caught me a little bit on my leg and I got a few cuts", he said.

"It was fantastic tonight, I had to get my head around it".

He said; "It was one of the toughest races of my life". "It's been a long journey, it's been incredible", said Farah who was accompanied by his family on a lap of honour.

But the opening night belonged to the other crowd favourite Farah who crossed the finish line amid a deafening roar after one of his hardest races as fireworks went off trackside. His 10,000 win was the finale of what became known in British lore as "Super Saturday", when home athletes won three gold medals within an hour.

From 200m to the final 100, Farah made his move and put distance to Cheptegei and Kenyan pair Paul Tanui and Bedan Muchiri. "I'm not anxious about that", he said, referring to what he felt was the most bruising battle of his brilliant career. "With two laps to go I didn't have the gas to go with them".

Kamworor exchanged the lead with Cheptegei performing the same role as he had in the Olympic final in Rio.

The Kenyans resumed their control up front soon afterwards and upped the pace recording a lap of 61 seconds with the Ugandans tucked in behind them and Farah 11th. "At 24, she's still developing and, although gold might be just out of reach, when the final comes around on Monday, I'm backing Laura to take a gutsy silver".
