Aldi stores in Germany stop selling eggs amid Dutch food safety scare

Aldi stores in Germany stop selling eggs amid Dutch food safety scare

Nearly a week after the Dutch authorities shut numerous poultry farms after finding high levels of fipronil in batches of eggs and the recalling of eggs from the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium due to this banned insecticide for use on farm animals because of its danger to human health, Brussels significantly escalates the geographical scope of the scandal.

Commission spokeswoman Anna-Kaisa Itkonen said the aim was "to share the information so that everybody knows that it's now also up to the Swedish, Swiss, French and to the United Kingdom national authorities to check".

"What I can say is that the farms are identified, the eggs are blocked, the contaminated eggs are traced and withdrawn from the market, and the situation is under control", she said.

"We have known since early June there was potentially a problem with fipronil in the poultry sector", Belgium's food safety agency spokeswoman Katrien Stragier told the BBC.

Shops in Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany, have removed the eggs from sale as a precaution.

But it says this is a very small proportion of the 1.8 billion eggs the United Kingdom imports each year.

Photo Farm workers discarded eggs in Onstwedde, the Netherlands, last week after concern about insecticide contamination.

Food producers, however, say there is no need to remove mayonnaise, cakes and other products containing egg from the shelves.

The British Egg Industry Council said there was no need for people to "change the way they cook or consume eggs".

Belgian and Dutch authorities are now investigating how the insecticide came into illegal contact with egg-laying chickens.

Belgium's agriculture minister meanwhile said he had ordered the agency to report by Tuesday on why it failed to notify neighbouring countries until July 20 despite knowing about fipronil contamination since June.

Belgian officials admitted on Saturday they had kept the problem under wraps and failed to trigger the EU's global food safety alert system, but said it was because of a fraud probe.

But it is banned from being used to treat animals destined for human consumption, such as chickens.
