Locals questioning theory that sea lice responsible for 'eating' teen's legs

Locals questioning theory that sea lice responsible for 'eating' teen's legs

But instead of a soothing swim, Sam's legs were devoured by mystery sea creatures.

Sam Kanizay's legs felt sore after playing a game of football on Saturday, so he chose to soak them at the beach.

Sam Kanizay lays in a bed with his feet bleeding.

Mr Kanizay said the injuries were a "freak incident" and has since received a biopsy and a number of stitches as medical experts try to piece together what happened.

His father, Jarrod Kanizay, said: "When he got out, he described having sand on his legs, so he went back in the water".

Jeff Weir, executive director of the Dolphin Research Institute, suspects the creature responsible is likely a shrimp-like crustacean.

One thing was immediately clear to Jarrod Kanizay, as he told The Associated Press: "These little things really love meat".

'But I realised that couldn't have been it, because it was evenly distributed over my whole ankle and foot'. Apparently, there are also voracious marine creatures ready to leave our legs covered in blood after a quick soak.

Sam's father has since posted a sickening video of the creatures - scooped out of the water with a net and believed to be sea lice - feasting on chunks of raw meat.

According to the Guardian Australia, Sam's dad said that once they got Sam's legs cleaned up, the bleeding would start immediately again and so they went straight to hospital.

Kanizay returned to the bay and waded back to the same spot where Sam had stood - albeit with two wet suits on to protect his skin.

They said that a piranha-style attack like this is highly unlikely to happen again any time soon.

"I'd would rather not see any other person experiencing this".

"But throughout the process, he's been really positive and happy ... he's in good health and we expect a full recovery".

"Most people won't feel it because they move around quickly in the water. the lad must have been standing very still for quite a while (to be bitten)", he said.

Sam was still hospitalized as he recovered from the ordeal.

After testing the creatures captured by the father, marine biologist Genefor Walker-Smith identified them as lysianassid amphipods, "a type of scavenging crustacean". Poore added that id sea lice were the cause of Sam Kanizay's injuries, it was a "pretty dramatic example" of an attack by the minuscule flesh-eating sea creatures.
