Matsuyama's 61 earns emphatic WGC Bridgestone win

Matsuyama's 61 earns emphatic WGC Bridgestone win

Matsuyama's bogey-free 61 equalled the course record held by Jose Maria Olazabal, Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia, but was the first to be recorded in the fourth round and the lowest final round in any World Golf Championship victory. He began the day two behind Johnson and Thomas Pieters, but surged into the lead by the third hole after chipping in for eagle at the par-5 second from 58 feet and then birdieing the third from three feet. Fulton Allem shot 62 when he won the old World Series of Golf in 1993. Pieters joined Knox and Rickie Fowler as the only players to shoot a round over par during the week and finish in the top nine. He closed with a 71. British Open champion Jordan Spieth, who will be pursuing a career Grand Slam at the PGA Championship, closed with a 68 that left him in a group sharing 13th on 276. It has become a tradition lately that at each major stop members of the Japanese media ask the game's top players if Matsuyama can be the one to break through.

With a clinical all-around performance on a cloudy afternoon, Matsuyama fired a record-tying nine-under-par 61 at Firestone's South Course to rocket to a five-stroke victory over Zach Johnson and insinuate himself into the conversation of favored players at the final major of 2017, this week's PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte. She had a six-shot lead going into the final round Sunday, and it was hard work. But Kim didn't falter and finished at 18-under 270.

Michelle Wie closed with a 66 and tied for third with Caroline Masson and Georgia Hall.

Matsuyama and world No1 Dustin Johnson have won the last five World Golf Championships.

Stroud played the final six holes at Montreaux Golf and Country Club with three birdies and an eagle to earn 20 points in the modified Stableford format.

"I was thinking about that at 16 - I knew if I birdied 16, 17 and 18, I could get there".

He took the lead with his 15-foot birdie putt on the sixth hole, and no one could keep up with him. That now looks back on, and he should go back up to number two with this win.

It is the first PGA Tour Champions win of the season for Goydos and fifth of his career. Knowing Sauers put his second shot into the lake fronting the green, Goydos just had to get the ball on the putting surface.

Hoffman posted a final-round 66.

Griffin, who had opened the 72-hole event with rounds of 66-65-66, finished tied for 16th with an 11-under total of 269 and fell from 22nd to 23rd on the tour's money list.

Charley Hoffman moved to eighth in the U.S. Team Presidents Cup standings with another outstanding result while Canadian Adam Hadwin, who finished tied 5th at Firestone, is projected to move to 10th spot in the International Team Standings in the biggest moves.

Inkster, the captain for the second straight time, added 18-year-old Angel Yin and Austin Ernst to her 10 automatic qualifiers. She passed over experience in Paula Creamer and six-time Solheim Cup veteran Angela Stanford.

The Solheim Cup is August 18-20 at Des Moines Golf and Country Club.
