Harford County Public Library Celebrates Solar Eclipse

Harford County Public Library Celebrates Solar Eclipse

There are between 2 and 5 solar eclipses every year; however, this will be the first time in 26 years since a total solar eclipse has been seen in the US.

On Monday, August 21st, 2017, the heavens-in the words of English poet Lavinia Greenlaw-will throw a "celestial dimmer switch" during the 2017 Total Solar Eclipse, and as excitement builds across the country for this cosmic spectacle, Austin Peay State University is hosting several events, including an official NASA viewing parties at the campus' Fortera Stadium.

"It's going to traverse the entire pass of the United States", Kopernik Observatory Executive Director Drew Deskur said. There will be a narrow path about 100 miles wide extending from OR to SC where the eclipse will be total. The eclipse will begin around 12:56 p.m. and end around 3:47 p.m.

The American Astronomical Society said earlier this week that it updated its safety advice "in response to alarming reports" of unsafe "eclipse viewers" popping up online.

We might want to view the August 21 eclipse as a primer to an event for our lifetime, coming right here to Pennsylvania on April 8, 2024. On the glasses themselves, look for the ISO icon to make sure it has the reference number 12312-2.

In addition to the preview event today, the Elkhart Public Library will host a viewing party on the day of the eclipse as well. Since light from the corona is about 1 millionth as bright as the surface of the sun, it can only been seen from the Earth during a total eclipse. Officials at the Kopernik Observatory say it may come closer to our area giving us a higher chance to view it within the totality.

Brits may also witness the partial eclipse - but only 4 per cent of the sun will be covered by the moon.

"It is the most weird, creepy, awe-inspiring astronomical event you will experience", Cooke says.

The path of totality - where day briefly becomes night - will pass over OR and continue to SC.

According to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the only time it's safe to view a solar eclipse without "eclipse glasses" or special viewing lenses is during the moment of "totality", when the moon completely obscures the sun's glaring disk. According to NASA's website, the total eclipse is expected to last up to 2 minutes and 40 seconds, depending on the person's location.

If, somehow, you miss the big eclipse, you've got seven years to prepare for the next one.

Stars will appear. Although stars are always present in the sky, the sun is the only star visible during the day.

"Now, unfortunately, there are fake eclipse glasses that are being distributed".

No matter how much you want to, NEVER, EVER look at the sun without eye protection. But these take-your-breath-away eclipses usually occur in the middle of the ocean somewhere, though, or near the sparsely populated top or bottom of the world. Birds roost. It only lasts a few minutes.
