Seekonk mosquito pool tests positive for West Nile Virus

A mosquito sample from Union County tested positive for West Nile virus.

West Nile virus is most commonly transmitted by mosquitoes, according to the CDC.

Avoid areas where mosquitoes are prevalent. There have been two reported cases this summer in IN, in Hamilton and Lake counties.

You probably should drain any standing water after Monday's rainfall: Mosquitoes recently trapped in Blue Ash have tested positive for West Nile virus.

"The positive bird means that residents of Jefferson County need to be more vigilant in their personal protective measures to prevent mosquito bites", said Gail Scott, Jefferson County Public Health Director. During 2016, 13 cases of West Nile virus infection were reported among Wisconsin residents. For instance, in our area, Asian Tiger mosquitoes which are carriers for Zika virus primarily bite very aggressively during the day.

To keep mosquitoes from entering a home, make sure window and door screens are in place and are in good condition.

It says few people infected with the virus have any symptoms at all, or they have flu-like symptoms such as fever, headache, body aches and fatigue.

About 70 to 80 percent people won't get sick if they're bitten by an infected mosquito.

"We have ramped up our mosquito testing this summer, using two staff members to trap mosquitoes throughout the County for identification", says Greg Kesterman, Assistant Health Commissioner. Symptoms of more severe disease can include high fever, neck stiffness, disorientation, coma, tremors, seizures and paralysis.

West Nile was found in both counties.
