The Dark Tower tops the USA box office with $19.5 million

The Dark Tower tops the USA box office with $19.5 million

And without a Suicide Squad or a Guardians Of The Galaxy on the late-summer docket, this is shaping up to be a typically, even particularly, modest August for box-office returns.

The Dark Tower opened to $19.5 million of business in its opening weekend, topping the chart but only just holding off Dunkirk's success at the box office.

"This is another tough weekend for the industry", concluded movie industry money-watcher Paul Dergarabedian at comScore.

The Dark Tower may have been a box office disappointment, but Sony and MRC still seem to be moving ahead with the franchise.

Annapurna's "Detroit", the latest film from Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow, met even more resistance, grossing a mere 7.25 million United States dollars for the weekend.

As reported by Box Office Mojo, this is the lowest grossing weekend for Summer 2017.

Of interest, "The Drawing of the Three" would bring fan-favorite characters Eddie Dean and Odetta Holmes/Detta Walker into the mix, but Jake's role in the story is much more complicated, at least in the books.

Coming in second was war movie Dunkirk, slipping from the No. 1 spot it occupied last week, with a three-day take of US$17.6 million, according to industry website Exhibitor Relations. The movie got the highest revenue from Russian Federation of $4.1 million out of $8 million from the 19 different markets. The computer-animated comedy netted US$12.4 million.

That leaves "Kidnap" ― from David Dinerstein's recently-launched Aviron, and Lotus ― which is racing to $10.2 million from 2,378 locations.

Meanwhile, Aviron's "Kidnap", the Halle Berry thriller which has been awaiting release for two years, scored a modest debut, taking in 10.2 million Dollars.
