UAB Hospital named best in state by US News & World Report

UAB Hospital named best in state by US News & World Report

U.S. News evaluates data on almost 5,000 hospitals in 16 adult specialties, nine adult procedures and conditions, and 10 pediatric specialties.

For the second year in a row, Mayo Clinic in Rochester has been ranked the best hospital by U.S. News.

The health system earned national accolades in 15 of the ranking's 16 areas of medical specialties.

Complicating the comparison of the Medicare and U.S. News rankings is the fact that the magazine has an advertising component with its report.

In Florida, Mayo Clinic Jacksonville retained its statewide first-place ranking from past year, while Tampa General Hospital rose one rank to second place and UF Health Shands Hospital dropped two ranks to third place. And just 152 were nationally ranked on at least one specialty.

"This is the first time our programs at UK in neuro (neurology and neurosurgery) have achieved national rankings", said Dr. Larry B. Goldstein, the Ruth L. Works Professor and chair of the UK Department of Neurology, and co-director of the Kentucky Neuroscience Institute (KNI).

In addition to quality measures, U.S. News also rates hospitals based on reputation, which is one of the biggest criticisms of the report.

"Keck Medicine of USC is delighted to maintain our rankings among the best hospitals locally, regionally and nationally", said Thomas E. Jackiewicz, CEO of Keck Medicine of USC.

University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital earned top-50 status in six out of 10 pediatric specialties, according to the 2017-2018 rankings. General was rated the best hospital in America two years ago and placed third last year.

According to U.S. News, Mayo Phoenix excels, especially, in specialty areas dealing with cancer, gastroenterology and GI surgery, geriatrics and pulmonology. Minnesota's Mayo Clinic kept its perch at No. 1 from past year, followed respectively by the Cleveland Clinic and Johns Hopkins Hospital. "This sort of care is of a higher level than most patients need, so except in rare circumstances it's not necessary for patients to look beyond their region's Best Regional Hospitals".

UT Medical was beat out for best in the state by nationally ranked Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

KU Hospital ranked first in the metro area and first in the state of Kansas, while St. Luke's ranked second in the metro and second in Missouri to Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.

He said the project could help the hospital move up in the rankings next year. Spectrum Health-Butterworth and Blodgett Hospitals in Grand Rapids came in at No. 3 in the state rankings.
