Israeli warplanes bomb Gaza sites, casualties reported

Israeli warplanes bomb Gaza sites, casualties reported

Sirens were sounded in the southern Israeli city of Ashkelon Tuesday evening in response to a rocket launched from Gaza.

Seven Palestinians were injured and moved to a city hospital where one of them was reported in critical condition. No damage or injuries were caused by the rocket.

Israel says attacks carried out after rockets were fired out of Gaza, a claim that Hamas denies.

There were no immediate reports of injuries.

In February, Israeli security forces thwarted an attempt to smuggle hundreds of drones and other banned items into the Gaza Strip through the postal service.

According to a source within Gaza reported by the Agence France-Presse news agency, Israel's strike caused significant damage to two bases belonging to Hamas's military wing.

"Israel's deliberate arbitrary air strikes on Gaza resistance sites are a unsafe move", added Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhum.

Responsibility for the attacks Israel has traditionally imposes on the ruling in the enclave's Islamist movement Hamas.

Despite the tensions over Jerusalem's Temple Mount this summer, there have been only a few instances of rocket fire from Gaza landing in Israel.
