No need to panic, Guam governor says after North Korea threat

No need to panic, Guam governor says after North Korea threat

The North Korea has warned of making preemptive strikes against the USA military base of Guam in the Pacific, after two United States strategic bombers were sent again Tuesday to South Korea to stage mock nuclear bomb droppings exercise on North Korea strategic targets, China's Xinhua news agency reported the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) as saying on Wednesday.

Germany on Wednesday called on China and Russian Federation to dissuade Pyongyang from pursuing policies that would lead to a military escalation on the Korean peninsula after North Korea said it was considering a missile strike on Guam.

Guam was described by President Barack Obama's defence secretary Ashton Carter as "an important strategic hub for the United States military in the Western Pacific".

As North Korea responded to that Kim Jong Un-esque ultimatum with overt threats against Guam, U.S. B-1Bs based on the island drilled with their Japanese and South Korean partners, "demonstrated the U.S. commitment to regional allies, increased readiness and exercised the right under global law 'to fly legally in the place and time of our choosing, '" according to a DoD news release.

The North Korean army said in a statement distributed on Aug 9 by the state-run news agency that it was studying a plan to create an "enveloping fire" in areas around Guam with medium- to long-range ballistic missiles.

The contingent of B-1Bs is from the 37th Expeditionary Bomb Squadron and recently deployed to Guam from Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota, DoD officials said.

"I want to reassure the people of Guam that now there is no threat to our island or the (neighbouring Northern) Marianas", he said.

Calvo said there were "several levels of defence" strategically placed to protect Guam and he had been assured by the White House that a strike on the territory would be considered an attack on the United States. I also want to remind national media that Guam is American soil and we have 200,000 Americans in Guam and the Marianas. This is the response by many USA citizens in Guam today.

"I've kind of felt this is a good thing", she said.

It was captured and held for two and a half years by Japan during World War II before being retaken by U.S. forces in 1944.
