Secretary Mattis warns North Korea not to invite 'destruction of its people'

Secretary Mattis warns North Korea not to invite 'destruction of its people'

US Defence Secretary James Mattis has said North Korea should cease any consideration of actions that would "lead to the end of its regime and the destruction of its people".

"The [North Korean] regime's actions will continue to be grossly overmatched by ours and would lose any arms race or conflict it initiates".

"Kim Jong Un should take heed of the United Nations Security Council's unified voice, and statements from governments the world over, who agree the DPRK poses a threat to global security and stability", he said, according to The Hill.

On Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to unleash "fire and fury" if the communist nation continues to threaten his country.

"Just because the rhetoric goes up, doesn't mean our posture changes", one official said.

The warning followed Trump's tweets earlier in the day that the USA nuclear arsenal is "now far stronger and more powerful than ever before".

In another statement, quoting a different military spokesman, North Korea also said it could carry out a pre-emptive operation if the United States showed signs of provocation.

"North Korea had best not make any more threats to the United States", said a stern-looking Trump, seated with his arms crossed and with his wife beside him, at his golf course in Bedminster, New Jersey. They evoked President Harry Truman's announcement of the USA atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, Japan, in 1945, in which he warned of "a rain of ruin from the air, the like of which has never been seen on this earth".

Steny Hoyer, the No. 2 Democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives, said Trump's threat to North Korea "is reckless and shows a serious lack of judgment".

Mattis also lauded the State Department's efforts to bring a diplomatic solution to the Korean peninsula's conflict.

Japan hosts around 54,000 U.S. military personnel, the U.S. Department of Defense says, and tens of thousands of Americans work in both countries.

The South Korean capital, Seoul, is within range of massed North Korean rockets and artillery, which would be impossible to destroy in a first US strike.
