Valve Announce New Game…But It's Not The One You've Been Hoping For

At the International Dota 2 Championships this year, Valve surprised with the announcement of a new title.

In the world of fantasy video games, you are nothing until you get your own digital card game. As Kotaku reports, there will be lane-based gameplay, will feature Dota 2 characters like the Bounty Hunter and will feature cards that offer a myriad of different attack and defense opportunities. There's Gwent, CD Projekt Red's spin-off from The Witcher, Bethesda's The Elder Scrolls Legends, Mojang's Scrolls and all manner of others. And. well.it's not called Half-Life 3. It's clear there's a lot of cross over with Dota 2 so it's likely other similar concepts will be incorporated into Artifact. I think it's safe to assume that Artifact will find its way to Steam, but whether we'll end up playing this on mobile platforms or anything else is unknown at this time.

Players can equip item cards on to heroes, play creature cards, activate special hero abilities and leave persistent effects on each lane.

Valve hasn't stopped making games, but sometimes it sure feels like it. Hearthstone is a good example of a game recent overnight popularity after Valve released the mobile version.

Sean Plott revealed the game during the second day of TI7, and he didn't divulge much to those present. It has not, however, released a new game since the VR minigame collection The Lab in 2016.

The use of the term "trading card game" is interesting, as most digital card games don't have trading and refer to themselves as "collectable card games" instead.

Apparently, the game involves cards, but it's not necessarily a Hearthstone clone.
