700000 contaminated eggs distributed in UK

700000 contaminated eggs distributed in UK

The country's biggest supermarket chain, Albert Heijn, reportedly announced that it was removing 14 different types of eggs from its shelves.

"The eggs have mostly been sold to cafeterias, cafes and catering firms, and have most probably not been sold in Danish retail stores to any large degree", the agency said, adding the eggs posed no risk to human consumption.

On Monday the European commission said British food safety authorities were alerted over the weekend that eggs imported from Germany could be risky. Any remaining meat has been destroyed while tests are ongoing on the pâté, which have been removed from sale. Last Friday, it said there was no evidence the United Kingdom was affected at all.

"If we had seen this information communicated to our respective agencies, vigilance concerning Fipronil would have been greatly increased", Ducarme said, suggesting that the tainted eggs scandal might have been avoided.

Luxembourg said that eggs sold in branches of the discount supermarket Aldi had been withdrawn, with one batch containing so much fipronil it was unsafe to be eaten by young children. But they say the number is a tiny fraction of the eggs consumed each year in the country.

Last week, the UK's FSA said around 21,000 eggs were shipped to the country; today, it said it was "likely that the number of eggs that have come to the United Kingdom is closer to 700,000".

The FSAI said Fipronil is an insecticide which is not permitted for use around food producing animals, while noting that traceability on the eggs from the Netherlands contaminated with Fipronil was continuing.

It is illegal to use pesticides at a poultry farm.

The Dutch and Belgian authorities are raiding several addresses in both countries on Thursday as part of the investigation into at numerous poultry farms and their eggs.

"They are suspected of putting public health in danger by supplying and using fipronil in pens containing egg-laying chickens", prosecutors' spokeswoman Marieke van der Molen said.

According to Itkonen, Belgian authorities informed the Commission of their findings on July 20, while the authorities of Netherlands and Germany informed on July 26 and 31 respectively.

Millions of eggs have been pulled from supermarket shelves in Europe.

The arrests came after coordinated raids with Belgian authorities at eight locations across The Netherlands with the assistance of Europe's policing and judicial agencies Europol and Eurojust.

But experts say the current food safety risk is not acute. She did not provide details on which companies or individuals were targeted.
