More Than Half of Republicans Would Support Postponing the 2020 Election

According to a new Washington Post poll released on Thursday, half of Republicans would be alright with postponing the 2020 election, because they are convinced of Donald Trump's false claims of voter fraud.

Almost half of Republicans (47 percent) believe that Trump won the popular vote, which is similar to this finding.

The pollsters also found that 47 percent of Republicans believe Trump won the popular vote, while 86 percent believe that millions of illegal immigrants took part in the election.

The poll was conducted among 625 adults who identified as Republicans or said they lean Republican between June 5th and 20th. Those who believed the previous election was influenced by voter fraud were more inclined to support the postponement of future elections.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly, and falsely, claimed millions voted illegally. Any Republican who is not supporting this president with no questions asked is going to find themselves drummed out of the party.

Maine's Republican governor says the state's secretary of state is making a mistake by denying a request for voter data made by a Trump commission. In reality, Hillary Clinton garnered nearly 3 million more votes than Trump.

Of course this is still hypothetical. The percentage giving a thumbs-up to this scheme rose to 56 percent if congressional Republicans joined Trump in calling for it.

"At a minimum, they show that a substantial number of Republicans are amenable to violations of democratic norms that are more flagrant than what is typically proposed (or studied)", the Post wrote about the poll. And although the ensuing chaos could turn more Republicans against this kind of proposal, it is also conceivable that a high-stakes and polarized debate would do the exact opposite.

Still, the authors - Ariel Malka, an associate professor of psychology at Yeshiva, and Yphtach Lelkes, an assistant professor at the University of Pennsylvania - suggest the results are worth paying attention to.
