Ruth Pfau, Beacon For Pakistan's Leprosy Patients, Dies At 87

Ruth Pfau, a German doctor and nun who dedicated her life to eradicating leprosy in Pakistan and who has been described as the country's "Mother Teresa", died in Karachi on Thursday.

Dr. Pfau, the founder of National Leprosy Control Programme was in charge of the Marie Adelaide Society of Pakistan (MASP), where leprosy patients were treated. She left her homeland and made Pakistan her home to serve humanity.

KARACHI: Dr Ruth Pfau, a symbol of selflessness and devotion to leprosy patients, passed away at the age of 87 in Karachi late Wednesday night while she was undergoing surgery.

Due to her tireless efforts, the World Health Organisation in 1996 declared Pakistan one of the first countries in Asia to be free of leprosy.

Not required to take the veil or live in seclusion, she ended up in Pakistan by chance. He said that the glorious tradition of serving humanity set by Dr Ruth Pfau will be continued. In the following couple of years, the Marie Adelaide Leprosy Center opened more branches in every other area of the nation, additionally in Gilgit-Baltistan.

Tributes pour in after the passing of German nun and doctor who spent 56 years in the country battling leprosy.

Pakistani government honoured her with the Hilal-e-Pakistan in 1989 and Hilal-e-Imtiaz in 1979.

Her death drew messages of condolences from all sections of Pakistani society, with many comparing her passing to that of the philanthropist Abdul Sattar Edhi, who passed away past year.
