VP Ansari says Muslims feeling insecure; No better country than India: BJP

VP Ansari says Muslims feeling insecure; No better country than India: BJP

Yesterday, in an interview with the Rajya Sabha TV, Ansari had said that there is a feeling of unease and a sense of insecurity creeping in among the Muslims in the country.

Trinamool Congress MP Derek O'Brien applauded Ansari's decision to extend the sessions of Rajya Sabha by one hour, giving each speaker an extra three minutes to speak.

He alleged that Ansari made the statement to set his "political agenda".

Ansari, 80, was first elected Vice President and Rajya Sabha chairman in 2007, when he defeated the NDA's candidate Najma Heptullah. He also stated considering the whole world, India is the most tolerant nation. "People try to use minority issues for political purposes".

"To that Hamid Ansari responds, saying, ".breakdown of Indian values, breakdown of the ability of the authorities at different levels in different places to be able to enforce what should be normal law enforcing work and over all the very fact that (the) Indianness of any citizen (is) being questioned, is a disturbing thought".

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, also the leader of the House, referred to the frequent chaos that erupts in the Rajya Sabha and reminded Mr Ansari that he once called the Rajya Sabha "a federation of anarchists" which forged a debate on whether "anarchist" could be used in the context of the House.

Earlier, BJP general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya had criticised the vice president for his comment that there was a sense of insecurity among Muslims and said such a "petty" remark was not expected from someone in his position. "The opposition also has no right to disrupt the House". "Its only source of reference is the book of rules".

The former vice-chancellor of the Aligarh Muslim University - from where he completed his doctorate - was the chairman of the National Commission for Minorities post retirement when the United Progressive Alliance government and the Left named him as their candidate for the vice presidential post. "And I am not the only one in the country; a great many people feel the same way". Majority appreciated his constant endeavour to stick to the rules and not allowing any legislation to be passed during din. "But what passes between the Vice-President and the PM in the nature of things must remain in the domain of privileged information".
