28 killed, 80 injured after two trains collide in Egypt

Egypt's Health Ministry has further raised the death toll from a train collision just east of the coastal city of Alexandria, saying that 40 people were killed.

One of the trains was travelling from Cairo, the other from Port Said, according to local media.

At least 36 people have died and 123 injured after two trains collided near Alexandria in northern Egypt.

A medical official told state TV some wounded people were still stuck in the trains.

State television showed dozens of people crowding around the damaged train cars, with bodies strewn on the ground.

The statement did not say what caused the accident, only that the authority's experts would investigate.

"The rescue team is now searching for survivals while ambulances are transferring the injured to nearby hospitals", said Magdy Hegazi, undersecretary at the Health ministry.

Figures recently released by the state's statistics agency show that 1,249 train incidents took place past year - the highest number since 2009 when the number reached 1,577.

At least 360 people were killed in 2002 in Egypt's worst train disaster when a major fire engulfed seven carriages of an overcrowded passenger train.

One resident, Hoda, was standing on her rooftop when she saw the trains collide.

Egyptians have long complained that the government has failed to deal with chronic transport problems, with roads as poorly maintained as railway lines.

It was the country's deadliest rail accident in more than a decade.
