Foreign observers urge patience as Kenya awaits poll results

Foreign observers urge patience as Kenya awaits poll results

The hacking claims prompted Kenya's Election Commission to react and counter the allegations, assuring Kenyans that "all is well".

Tensions have been running high as supporters of opposition candidate Raila Odinga take to the streets to express their anger over the disputed presidential election.

The election commission has rejected claims by opposition leader Raila Odinga that its database was hacked and results manipulated, and that an unofficial tally confirms him as the victor.

Kenya's election commission suffered a hacking attempt after Tuesday's vote but the system was not compromised, its chairman has said.

At least five people were killed in separate incidents on Wednesday during riots that followed the general elections in Kenya, APA reports quoting Anadolu Agency.

As of Wednesday night, provisional results from the election commission website put Kenyatta in front with 54.3 per cent of votes counted to 44.8 percent for Odinga, a margin of 1.4 million ballots with 97 percent of polling units reported.

Msando, the election commission's head of IT, was tortured and murdered before his body was found in a forest outside of Nairobi.

The leading candidates have avoided using inflammatory rhetoric that could fuel tensions ahead of the vote, global election observers said.

Thabo Mbeki, the former South African president in charge of the African Union observer mission, has praised the poll so far.

As the final results deadline approaches, we shall see what transpires with this election! It's important they have the time to do these procedures well.

"Our election management system is secure".

He encouraged political leaders in Kenya "to rise to the occasion" and spurred the leadership of that country to ensure Kenya does not "burn because of an election".

According to wittnesses speaking to the Associated Press, some protests began to break out in opposition-led areas within minutes of Odinga finishing his televised speech in which he accused hackers of infiltrating the vote system.

Nothing came of it in 2013 - but in 2007, post-election violence led to more than 1,000 deaths.

Kenyatta has not commented on Odinga's allegations. At least three people were killed amid clashes with police.

"Even if I am celebrating, let me celebrate in a way that will not provoke the other person because if I celebrate in a way that provokes another person, that escalates that feeling of people fighting of which we don't want", said Otieno.
